Combined X-ray and electron microscopy study of MgB2 powders, wires and tapes

چکیده
MgB2 wires, tapes and bulk samples produced within the EU-funded HIPERMAG project have been studied by a combination of X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The reaction layers forming at the interface between the ceramic core and Fe or Ni sheaths can be studied with both methods. The complementary techniques enable to study both the microstructure and the formation kinetics of the interface layers. Grain sizes can be determined either by direct observation or by analysis of the shape of X-ray diffraction peaks. Electron microscopy can detect B-rich secondary phases and phases present in small fractions that are not accessible by x-ray diffraction. On the other hand, synchrotron diffraction provides a fast and non-destructive method for the study of the main phases and their development during insitu, high-temperature investigations. The combination of the two techniques is a very valuable tool for the optimisation of MgB2-based superconducting material.

MgB2 wire and tape were prepared using the powder in tube and reaction in-situ technique. All samples were characterized using the XRD, SEM, TEM, as well as transport and magnetic measurements. High transport and magnetic critical current density values have been obtained for metal-clad wires and tapes. Different sheath materials have been examined, but Fe appears to be the best sheath for MgB...
متن کاملMicrostructures of SiC nanoparticle-doped MgB2/Fe tapes
We have studied bulk MgB2 synthesized by reaction of MgH2 and B with and without SiC nanoparticles and at a range of reaction temperatures. All of the samples showed enhanced upper critical fields compared to most bulk MgB2, including the sample with 10 at. % SiC reacted at 600 °C, which showed Hc2 0 K 42 T. Extensive transmission electron microscopy TEM and STEM observations show that using Mg...
متن کاملAnisotropy of the critical current in MgB2 tapes made of high energy milled precursor powder
For applications of MgB2 wires or tapes, high critical currents in high magnetic fields are essential. By using tapes in superconducting coils the anisotropic behaviour of the critical current, i.e. the dependence on the direction of the external field in relation to the tape surface, has to be taken into account. The anisotropy of MgB2 tapes with mechanically alloyed (MA) precursor powder and ...

Abstract: In this study Al-5 (Vol) % SiCp nanocomposite powder has been successfully synthesized by high-energy planetary milling of Al and SiC powders for a period of 25 h at a ball-to-powder ratio of 15:1. The changes of the lattice strain, the crystallite size of the matrix phase, and the nanocomposite powder microstructure with time have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray m...

(Mo1-x-Crx)Si2 composite powders were successfully synthesized by ball milling of Mo, Cr and Si elemental powders. Effects of the Cr content, milling time and annealing temperature were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to characterize the milled and annealed powders. The morphological and microstructural evolutions were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmissio...
